The nerd hatred for the show is such that this is nearly a ten percent improvement over the RT score of the first season.
I guess many of the trolls may be nerds but please don't equal nerds with trolls.
I would say I'm a nerd in some ways but I'm sure as hell no troll ;) , I'm a human being.

Just watching this episode now. From the opening I'd say I really liked this take on Victor Zsasz. He's not really a character I've been impressed by in the past, but this version treads an interesting line between professional assassin and nutcase.

I guess my question is how the hell do they know they should renew Batwoman for Season 3 already, when the ratings are tanking so hard? Seems a bit of "look how woke we are!" going on there.

But as far as the show: yeah, I sat down and watched the first three episodes in a row. It actually helped to do that, to get an immediate sense of how the show intended to develop the character.

And here's my assessment - there are a lot of absurd premises in the show. Like:
- talking to a plant, if you're not Poison Ivy.
- how easily Luke winds up giving the whole store of the Batcave up to a woman with proven criminal associations.
-How does Zsasz (brilliantly portrayed by the actor) go around just killing people in broad daylight (in fact, killing so many people that he fills up his entire body with kill hashmarks) without any opposition or consequences?
-How does Mary operate an illegal hospital so blatantly that she has actually *cancer patients* and *employees* (one of whom gets killed with little or no consequence).
-How close to Gotham is Coryana that Safiyah's minions can actually drug both Alice and Ryan (and admittely, that part is hot) and take them all the way to the island and back in basically the blink of an eye?
-And what about this whole Desert Rose cure-all thing..Safiyah would really go around killing random people to keep that secret rather than revealing it to the world for all the good it can do? (this definitely exposes Safiyah as a seriously twisted villainess)

Javicia looks good in that Batwoman costume. In fact, in that shot where she's standing on the top of the tall building addressing the protestors, looking confident with hands on hips, I think you can even see a little bit of toe (check the tape, Maskripper).

However, her choice to up her ethnic quotient (identity is constantly mentioned in this series, so far) by replacing the iconic red hair with a weave from a neighborhood wig shop (and I should know - I've bought a couple wigs from those very shops for my videos, and they look way better than the one Javicia is wearing) is a virtue signal from here to the moon.

Also, the Persian actress who plays Safiyah is gorgeous. And come to think of it, now that Ruby Rose is gone, every single actress in this TV show is both stunning *and* has lovely long hair. You couldn't ask for a better lineup in a world of lipstick lesbians.

Anyway, I'll keep watching. Why not - it's free!

- There is the throwaway line about Batman by Zsasz when he compares Batwoman to the previous capes. It implies that things were harder in the past. It was an excellent portrayal and better than the Gotham version.
- Safiyah has a relatively long speech about protecting the knowledge of the Desert Rose so it doesn't get exploited by others just like other resources. Fear of what could happen to it and island if some people find out about it.

Renewal seems to be tied to how many other shows are being done by the same production company and the lack of other programs that are doing well. The CW doesn't get to be too picky as the less favored part of Warner Brothers.

........
The ratings didn't go down that much (unless you compare everything to the very first episode of the show like some.......do).
And seeing how TV numbers are going down each year due to the massive amount of more and more shows and streaming.... it's rather normal I guess.
And after all, it's the CW....

Glad that we get some discussion about plot points going on here!

And I just wanna counter your mentioned premises"as they can be "defused" in my opinion.... ;)
- well, the plant is a "stand-in" for her killed foster mom, that's why she talks to it. And that's only 2 or 3 lines if I remember right
- Well, he is pretty hostile towards her most of the time. Only when she is urgently needed he gives her any help
- Yeah, good old Zsasz can escape that lab building. But we don't actually see how and if there was opposition. And as we only see him in 2 locations in the building....there may have been opposition on his path. If they had shown us his whole path in and out....without them trying to stop him, then that would be something really odd.
- Well, the patients that Mary cares for are mostly there because they can't get/afford medical treatment elsewhere....
- I actually don't know where Coryana is supposed to be but we actually don't know how much time passes during these two got flown to that island and back. If it's located somewhere in or near the Caribbean...they could be flown there in a few hours, no big deal.
- Well, Safiyah knows what this Desert Rose is worth and she has no interest in sharing it as she wants to preserve the island as she told in the last episode. I guess by selling it she could make endless money, but she seems already wealthy and has no interest in it...I guess.

But I'm glad that you are enjoying some/many(?) aspects of the show.

Yeah, I think Alex Morf did a really good job with playing him. Insane and creepy, but not completely nuts.
And the song fitted so perfectly in this scene to his creepiness:

Well worded :)
Do you watch any other CW hero shows? Like Supergirl, Flash, Arrow, Black Lightning, Legends of Tomorrow?
Season 1 had a rather rocky start in the first 2-3 episodes but improves steadily.
The show has a great villainess (Alice). As it is a CW show it has quite some relationship drama in it.
Also, it does have some pretty good action scenes in it.
I do like the rather realistic touch in terms of superpowers and magic as that there is much more in other shows.
Also, the dark atmosphere in Gotham is really something.
As you may have read season 2 now has a new lead actress/Batwoman (and a costume change)
The change is starting to pay off in my opinion.
The new character is now getting into her new destiny as Batwoman and I'm looking forward to see much more of her.
If you have any questions about the show or episodes...feel free to post here or write me a PM.
I have seen every episode at least 3 times  ...and am ....rather... passionate about the show ;)

Given its low ratings and the fact most so called woke people apparently don't watch it should be an indicator.

Ironically the show is probably watched more by people who diss on the show than actual fans.

To me the only "fans" I encounter are like that over-enthusiastic art teacher in jr high who says "homework is the best thing evar! You have no idea what you're missing!". Basically over enthusiastically liking something not cause its good but cause its what you're supposed to like.

I watched Arrow religiously. Appealed greatly to the Batman fanboy in me. Those first two seasons were especially incredible. I watched the Flash up until the Savitar reveal. It absolutely turned me off the show. Supergirl was just okay for me even though I adore the outfit and actress. Lacked inspiration. Same for Legends. So that was my long winded way of saying, yes I am familiar with CW DC shows haha.

I am always a bit skeptical of shows set in Gotham without out Bruce Wayne in it. I am afraid it will be a case where all it does is remind me of reasons to miss batman with every familiar villain that shows up.

With all that said do you think I would enjoy it?

The low ratings is, for me, a bigger indicator of a not so good show than anything else. I do tend to believe that the show just won't interest me, not because it's "woke" but because I have trouble getting through shows/movies set in Gotham without Batman or at least Bruce Wayne. Still if it is good might be worth a shot.

As with most CW shows, the writing is poor most of the time. It's better than season 1(low bar) and Javica makes for a great Batwoman, much better fit for the character than Ruby Rose, IMO. The show tends to stray too far from the source material for my liking, but it has its strong points now and then. Probably irritate some people with this, but I think it's better than Supergirl, which seemed to be written by 18-year old creative writing students with a love triangle fetish.

Yes I would much more chalk it up to bad writing, no good plots, bad acting. I'm thinking what is really so woke about it? Not much. Not sure what its promoting other than fetish scenes involving other races or other sexual orientations hook up. In fact it seems more fetishizing groups than it does anything else.

Bad writing and plots, but that has become the new normal for almost all the superhero shows on the CW.

When the best reason to watch a hero show is the villain, Alice, then they must be doing something really wrong. The show has it's moments, but they are far enough between not to be a must see TV.

I think the new style of writing is a series of "moments" like emotional moments stitched together with a weak plot. Its almost like a porn flic in that no one cares if the plumber has the right tool, that identity is just an excuse to get to the money shot.

So these shows become a series of emotional moments, posing, fights for fight sake and the plot just stitches these together. Flash suffers from this where there is the main story then each character goes off with someone and "talks" or emotes then some more of the story progresses.

Well Grinchmaster X, he actually asked the folks who are watching the show, which isn't you ....as it would surprise me if you would have seen more than 1 episode.
And people who diss the show mostly don't watch it, especially not live on TV. At best they are watching some trolls videos about it as they just love to spit their hate on it.
"Thanks" for putting the word fans in "", that says a lot about you.
I guess you are referring to me with your art teacher comparison. I don't like teachers. I'm a passionate fan of the show. You may look up "passionate" in a dictionary...that's actually a rather positive thing...the opposite of trolling...in a way. I'm not preaching to anyone. I am rather defending the show as it gets constantly attacked by a certain group.
I waited 20 years for another TV show with a masked woman in the lead role of a TV show (since "Queen of swords").
Could the show be better? Of course! There are quite some aspects I would change. Especially I would include more action scenes and more peril to it. The writing could be better but still provided some really good storylines. But the show does although a lot of things really good as I posted above.
The costume alone is already fantastic! A real mask and a good suit.
But damn, I am very happy and thankful for this show as it gives me quite a lot of joy.
You may look up the word "joy" in a dictionary as well. That's the opposite of what you are posting/dispensing on this site.
I don't like making posts like this, but I can't let such comments stand here unanswered.
But that won't change my overall positivity.

Also, what do you know about the storylines of this show? Especially with your ongoing porn comparisons. Feel welcome to post your knowledge of the storylines.... which might be kind of difficult as you are not watching the show. Some storylines are really good. The whole, tragic "how Beth became Alice" plot is done really well for example.
-
Just a short one on the "low" TV ratings. They were good enough for the show to be renewed.
And again, these are only the TV ratings. It's the CW.
They were higher than other superhero shows like Black Lightning, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow (last seasons).
And they will be higher as the examples above this season.
Flash and "Superman& Lois" will get more viewers.
-
@VictorBlack95:
Well, yeah Arrow season 1 and 2 were fantastic! They lured me into the CW shows.
I actually watch all the "hero" shows from the Arrowverse. Even LoT and Supergirl aren't exactly favorites of mine. (Supergirl was much better for me in the earlier seasons...surprise)
Should you watch Batwoman? Well, give it a try!
If you do, please watch at least the first 3 episodes of season 1. And keep in mind that it improves ;-)
Also, keep in mind that Ruby Rose will leave the show...if you don't like her in the show.
Would be interesting to know what you think of these episodes with your knowledge of the CW shows.

Look guys people can not like something, it's allowed. Saying why they don't like it isn't necessarily dissing on the show its just saying why they don't like it.

Of course, it is allowed. But when it reaches it certain level...it's trolling.
You know what I do if I don't like a show? (In general, not addressing only this forum...)
I don't watch it. That's it! Yeah, if someone asks me, I will say why I don't like it or why it doesn't interest me.
But I don't troll around, complaining endlessly about it.
I don't go over on fansites to make fun of a show they like.
I don't wish for shows to be canceled, dumping loads of hate on it.

I support the shows I like and just ignore the ones I don't like.
If I am not interested I don't watch it.....the end.
But some folks watch their shows and spill their hate on the ones they hate for whatever reasons.
These aggressive, anti-social, toxic "I hate this, I hate that" trolls are just annoying.
And I can't stand idle by...I will defend the shows I care about against such aggressions.

Yes but these are SERIES where episodes are discussed and new events in each episode can trigger new conversations, BUT they may be on similar lines.
You may not like Ruby Rose's initial costume and say so
They change it 3/4 episodes in.
You may still not like it. You say so.
That's not you constantly being negative that's you not liking the two iterations of the costume they have so far used. Now there's a new wrap around cowl. Maybe that's not to your taste either.
IT'S FINE TO SAY SO.
This forum is meant for such discussions.

I'm old I use caps for EMPHASIS they can only be shouting in prose.

And if there is a Superheroine series on perhaps you are watching it in the hope it WILL get better or perhaps have a sexy villainess in an episode where you DO like her costume.

Its OK to post about something you don't like and some people watch things they don't like in the hope they will improve.
I often sit through terrible films in the hope of seeing a scene or perhaps some dialogue that may save it, or, a camera shot, a one liner, something that makes my investment of time worth while as I can appreciate that moment of skill. "Sharknado" being a case in point. 😂

Again, yes, it's totally fine to post about something you don't like.
That's ok.... until it reaches a certain level.
I like discussions with folks who actually watch the show and point out things they don't like or do like.
But trolls are on another page. They practically know nothing about the show (besides from troll videos or troll pages) as they don't watch it.
They bring up some random issues to masquerade their real dislikes of this show.
For example, I rarely read comments like..... Oh, I don't like the show because of its portrayal of strong women...or....I don't like the show because there are gay folks in it.....or....I don't like the show because the new character is black. (which triggered a whole new wave of trolls)
Because if they would say that it would show to all how they really are like. And they would get fitting responses.
And I'm not talking about you or most of the other members here.
Yes, there are (of course) legitimate reasons to not like it, but the amount of hate the show receives is.....very disturbing.
Nobody would get so passionate about hating this show it just be reasons like bad writing or perhaps too little action.
The hate shows that there is much more to it. If someone doesn't like it...ok.
I don't get why people are so passionate about hating a TV show as they somehow feel so deeply offended by it being out there.

I remember I once was for example too harsh on Bert as he likes to post about Supergirl and how he dislikes/hates how the show has developed.
That's ok. He was watching the show and knew what he was talking about. He then stopped watching because of his disappointment and for reasons that are understandable.
And he is also talking about what he did LIKE in the show earlier on. That works for me.

But some people only spread negativity and hate. If someone posts a lot about whatever....and the big majority are just showing hate and dislike....then it's not ok for me.
-
So, that was enough off-topic for me, let's return to Batwoman Season 2.

I'm offering an explanation as to why one group may like the show. A different audience type. Its better than assuming the audience is a bunch of counter culture trolls simply tearing things down to "destroy the normatives". I do remember someone here ranting about how "It's breaking down old oppressive role models that needs to be crushed. And they are getting crushed, year by year." I get suspicious as to their real motives why they like something.

Some people like procedurals. Some like emotional moments.

Yes I watched the whole first season, maybe I missed one or two episodes. Most are on youtube now in some form.
But some people only spread negativity and hate.
C'mon. That's like labeling everyone who politically disagrees with you as a hate group. There IS such a thing as bad writing or bad plots or glaring mistakes.

The entire point of Episode 4 was to drive a woke political statement home.

Why do we watch if we really don't like it? Well, because it's still a show with a superheroine in it. So we figure that at some point,
that superheroine will be in a tight costume, doing some decent action scenes. And then, much (if not all) is forgiven.

Or maybe there'll be some other Easter Eggs that we can enjoy and get some small pleasures from, such as the spinner rack with various comic books in it spanning nearly 30 years of output.

They do need a proofreader sometimes. For example, the comic book shop in the episode is clearly called 'Hero Galaxy Comics', but young Ryan's best friend calls it 'Galaxy Hero Comics'.

Isn't it a little bit hypocritical (or perhaps the intent is merely ironic?) to both defy labeling down-voters as potential trolls and haters whilst also instinctively suspecting the real and true motives of why somebody professes to like something as potentially sinister? Why should it be considered sacred that we should quietly accept people's right to hate on a thing but perfectly acceptable to sneer and pry for the truth of why somebody professes to LIKE a thing?

I mean, I don't actually mean to accuse or argue here! People are wildly inconsistent in our beliefs, motives, and behavior, perfectly capable of stoutly defending things that we are totally unaware that we are flagrantly shitting on elsewhere... but maybe it's worth thinking on? If we MUST give the benefit of the doubt that a troll is not a troll... as though that were sacred law, then that would have go both ways no? If we are to quietly accept everyone's right to say 'Batwoman sucks ass' then we must additionally quietly accept everyone's right to say 'Batwoman is the best ever' and not read or attempt to further probe those opinions for their probable cause... and like... that simply doesn't work with human nature right? Nothing good comes of blindly accepting the things that occur around us as absolutely true... and it's incumbent upon us to take further thought, or not, dependent upon our personal investment in the truth...

but maybe a bit less bias towards defending the 'con' and prosecuting the 'pro' is in order? Or at least some value in acknowledging the irony. I don't know? Do what you want, I just thought I'd note this since it's a thing I often see, but rarely see acknowledged. It's not like I don't have a shitgob of conflating beliefs of my own afterall... just... there's nothing sacred about hating on something. If we're free to question people's motives for liking stuff... it's fine candor to question why they hate something as well.

As a disclaimer I don't watch any of the WB superheroes programs not my thing.

But I would point out that that you are creating a new character, inserting her into the iconic Bat costume and she is replacing a 3rd tier Bat family member who had been built up in away to diminish the franchise character.

That is going to hurt the ratings add to the fact that for several weeks she was going against NFL games where Tom Brady was featured

Watching this series, just like you, Maskripper.

Javicia is smoking hot. They poured her into a fancy party dress in this episode which was a welcome change. But in her costume,
she also looks great although it could be slightly tighter here and there. The only drawback in her appearance is that terrible wig.
In fact, for a show that's supposed to be as woke as it is, all of the actresses look very chic and stylized.

All that being said, the dialogue is absolutely drenched with activist buzzwords. In Episode 5 alone, I caught: "All [Cops] Are Bastards" (twice), "be gay, do crimes", "burn it all down", "toxic masculinity" and "what are your pronouns?"

They said, "the CROWS are bastards".
Because they are totally out of control here and answer to no one but themselves.
Yes, that is a comment to real events, but that isn't the show is saying the cops are bastards. It's just a comment.
The cops here are rather the good guys as they actually are much more controlled and follow the laws.....if they are shown, which isn't happening that often.
The Crows here are something else....they are a private company that makes their own rules, they are practically the worst possible law enforcement version that protects the rich people of Gotham.

Technically, at least once a character said "**All** Crows are Bastards." Which was I put the word "cops" in the bracket, as I was paraphrasing to better demonstrate my point. It's not just a "comment" - it's conveniently the same acronym as the Antifa slogan ACAB, which I've seen spray-painted around my city in all the hipster areas for the past few years.

Didn't you notice something about the Batwoman series? There are almost no cops in the show. If you go to the IMDB page, you'll find someone playing "Commissioner Forbes" for two episodes, and a couple listings for "GCPD Officer". But there are a lot more listings for "Crows Agent."

The security and enforcement for Gotham has been basically turned over to the private company, the Crows. That's part of the whole dynamic of the series. So the use of the "All Crows Are Bastards" is a stand-in for the political statement the showrunners want to make, dropping woke phraseology like bread crumbs. That way, they can level political criticism at the police without actually catching flak for it.

And when you combine it with the other buzzwords, it fits right in.

I know I'm crossing the streams here, but I'm rather perturbed with how out of synch the various Arrowverse series are(Batwoman is up to episode 6, yet Flash and Supergirl haven't started yet?!) I would have enjoyed a Supergirl/Batwoman crossover, and having SG having problems working around BW with her kryptonite poisoning! Would be like a Kryptonite Woman?!
Spoiler
Obviously Lex and Luthorcorp haven't done enough advertising of their connections with the DEO and Supergirl, or Luke might try to contact Kate's friend Supergirl to try to help cure our lead's kryptonite poisoning!
Sorry, I just like seeing my girl, Supergirl, in perils!

My 2 cents.

Yeah, the seasons are spread all over the year. Supergirl and Stargirl (now in the Arrowverse as well) are starting in Summer.
Flash starts tomorrow.
We won't get any crossovers due to damn covid.
But yeah, I think it would be an option here for the Batwoman show to interact with Supergirl in the urgent matter, even that most likely won't be shown.

Quite a lot of peril for one episode and some sexiness too.

The flirtation between Ocean and Alice reminds me of the 90s aesthetic of Xena and Queen of Swords with the whole
tunics and breeches thing.

In addition to her agony from the kryptonite, Ryan gets beat quite heavily by two adversaries. I won't give any more away.
If you like peril-in-costume, it's worth watching at least, even if the story isn't that great.

https://www.hitc.com/en-gb/2021/03/18/i ... 3-rumours/

Interesting rumors that they are going to cancel the show after season 3 and just absorb BW into other Arrowverse shows. Wonder how that would work out, but if she can guest star in a bunch of shows that might also open up a return for Supergirl at some point. I'm glad they at least see the value in Javica as BW, while the writing has been typical CW lackluster nonsense for the most part, she has killed it as Ryan/Batwoman and I'm actually hoping in season 3 they can start fresh with her own story unrelated to Kate/Alice and all that other stuff that has made season 2 a bit of a mess.

I don't care about such rumors, especially in this case as the show is attracting so many...... who would just love to bring such rumors to life just to potentially damage the show.
And I guess posting on those websites about such rumors for this show attracts a lot of clicks.

With the disclaimer, that I don't like any of the WB D.C product.

the whole idea of creating a new character and calling her Batwoman compounded the mistake of having Batwoman instead of Bat Girl either as Barbara Gordon or Cassandra Cain. Batgirl has always been far more popular than Batwoman, I'd argue Huntress makes more sense

Personally I was excited when they first announced Batwoman. Her comic run was truly exceptional IMO, mainly because she was a stand alone from the Bat family and ran her own show without needing Batman's help or resources. The stuff with her family was well done in the comics and there was this fun supernatural air to it all. Unfortunately the CW didn't stick with any of the excellent source material they had from the comics and went off in some crazy directions and started with her being a fill in for Batman(I guess since they needed an anchor to a more popular character for a TV show), though still tried to keep the Kate and Alice plot central to it all. Unfortunately that all kind of goes out the window when you remove Kate from the scene entirely. I guess they've done what they could so far this season, but I'm hoping season 3 they just start with a clean slate and give Ryan her own story instead of her having to come in and be shoehorned into the already ongoing plot.

It was awesome seeing one of my favorite comic characters come to life on the TV screen, but sadly like almost everything else they touched, CW writing and ignoring of established source material kind of ruined it. Javica has filled in nicely to the role and IMO is better suited to the role in terms of her combat abilities and athleticism, and her acting is head and shoulders above Ruby, I just wish she could have her own story instead of them trying to recover the plot that fell apart when Ruby left the show.

Question for you. Could Javica been a success with an original character or if they had made her Vixen

That wig just really annoys me. Why wear something that restricts your periphery vision and possibly your hearing, because it's not like you need those in a fight, right? oh no wait.
