The Mandalorian (season 2 - spoilers)

Discussions about Movies & TV shows not "Super" related.

So, the second season of Mando is over. What did people think? I fuckin' loved it. It got a little heavy on the fanservice, but somehow got away with it. I haven't got this fanboyish over Star Wars in a long time...

... A long time.

Yeah, big thumbs up from me - it seemed to do a good job blending some of the feel of the original trilogy and elements from newer franchise material.
Spoiler
Each iteration of trying to recreate previous characters - de-aging someone in the finale's case, seems to be improving. I don't know what MH's opinion was but would be curious to know. I also enjoyed the end of credits scene, yet even more fan service :D

They managed to improve on the first season in a lot of ways, which is impressive because the first season was excellent.

The scope of their big episodes seemed much larger than in the first season. Truly cinematic in scale. Particularly in the first episode.

They're also not holding anything back. We got Boba Fett this season, and Bo-Katan, and Ahsoka, and
Spoiler
freakin' Luke Skywalker! And chances are, we'll get more of him next season, since there's no way they're writing Grogu out completely.
Really, a big question at this point would be "What can they do to top this?"

It depends what you mean by 'top', I suppose. My guess is that the only 'bigger' thing that can happen that would mean anything to Mando would be the reconquista of Mandalore itself. If I were the showrunners, though, I'd make that the absolute finale of the entire show, so it may not happen for a couple of seasons depending on how long the series goes.

I'd be quite interested in seeing the scale be pared back a bit, at least in the short term. I was very happy with all the familiar SW faces in season 2, and they were all done well, but it'd be nice to let the show have room to breathe, and to establish its own identity a bit more. More stuff with the original characters, smaller stories, more of Mando on his own doing his bounty hunter thing - at least for a season or so before stuff starts ratcheting back up again.

I don't think the season as a whole was that great but I think it was worth it for the finale that solved the riddle of the first two sequel movies, as in it explained Luke. There's no saving the last movie though, so I'm not sure what can be done.

Nice to see Favreau going to bat for Gina Carano. She is a joy to watch in Season 2, and it would be a shame to lose her from the series. Luckily I don't think she is going anywhere.

The Ahsoka debut was good too. Going to have to see her fight a little more before I'm impressed with her Jedi skills.

Now if only we could see a live-action debut of Mara Jade, the scorching-hot redhead in Star Wars we all deserve.
She's married to Luke, so she couldn't be too far away if Mark Hamill is in the picture. (and yes I realize she is technically EU,
but she was introduced all the way back in Splinter, so they could maybe make an exception)

You're right - that's my bad. Mara Jade was introduced in Timothy Zahn's "Heir to Empire" in 1991.
I was thinking that Mara was in Splinter with Luke, but it was actually Leia. Sorry.

But that's still before any movies were made other than the original trilogy. So Mara is definitely OG EU.

Like many fans I regard Zahn as the true sequel trilogy

It's a shame TLJ had so many script issues. I think the core idea of "Luke has decided there should be no more jedi because jedi keep turning to the dark side" isn't in and of itself a bad one.

Guess, it makes more sense to post on this topic as to open a new one with season 3 right now.

Gina Carano has been fired from the show (not surprisingly)
https://www.ign.com/articles/the-mandal ... -lucasfilm
-
Well, as much I like her in the series and how she kicks ass in other movies.... many of her posts on social media were totally inappropriate.
Especially the one with her nazi germany comparison ....and her anti-mask ramblings.
The timing is a little off, as it took Disney so long to do it.
Now it seems like they only take action after all these #fireginacarano campaigns on social media.
But seemingly they thought about that for a few months before they decided to kick her off the show.
-
I wonder if the role gets recast or if her character and Mando just don't work together anymore.

Do you think Cara Dune should be recast or should vanish from the show?

Gina was awesome, hope she can be cast in some other movies or shows.

So, they also need to fire Pedro Pascal, right?

No. Not in this thread too. It's just going to devolve into another political flamewar. Gina Carano really DID get fired, so I can hardly begrudge people bringing that up. But it'll just turn into another generic SH forum shitstorm. Once a thread takes this dark path, forever will it dominate its destiny.

They start it. Why fire Gina and not Pascal? They judge based of political idea, TV shows need to be for everyone not only for Dems

They're entirely inconsistent of course, but the silver lining is that this frees her up to do something else, for which there is a huge appetite.

I'd love to see Gina make a guest appearance on Kickass Kandy. A man can dream. He managed to get Alison Carroll! In reality I know this won't happen, but if I think about it enough there's the possibility of a lucid dream about it until I expire from horrible but relatable self-inflicted wanking injuries.

I hope they recast the character because Cara Dune was a decent idea for a character even if what's her name was a giant block of wood. Maybe they could even use some of that special effects magic to swap out the old actor for the new one in the original first two series.

That said I do quite like the idea the character gets hit by a bus or something. Maybe pushed off a cliff by a Jawa.

There was an actor who used to be in Star Trek who ended up turning into a far-right piece of shit so in the Picard series the character the guy had played made a brief appearance, getting graphically murdered so somebody could sell his borg implants. Feels a little petty but quite appropriate.

is the sliding scale this?
Far-Left = God like or perfect
Far Right = Piece of shit

what happened to people's difference of opinion without being cancelled? Just like the Rebel she played who fought against the ultimate cancel culture, the Empire with a dictator that destroyed rebel scum traitor planets....Imagine If Washington DC heads decided they did not.like that California keeps electing Nancy Pelosi so they destroy(cancel) them with a nuke from space...same damn thing, once we loose freedom to disagree and still live peacefully the country is doomed

While I don't side with Disney, Gina is a representative as long as she is on contract. There is a difference between defending oneself from attacks on Twitter vs kicking a hornet's nest and volunteering a post. One should never use Yazi Germany as the dipstick for any behavior going on in the US and associating anyone or any group to such behavior just goes the wrong way. This should also be true of Pascal and so the hypocrisy is obvious.

Whenever you make your argument "and that's what the Yazis did" you're gonna just shoot yourself in the foot. She didn't need to make that post. She was under no pressure to do so.

But then we're back to the hypocrisy of some saying they are for strong women... only if these women say a narrow set of things and bend to the will of the collective.

Hopefully Ryan Reynolds uses her in a movie.

I will add that I don't think this kind of censorship is a right/left thing. Its much older and goes back to co-alpha behavior in monkeys. Basically there will always be a group that self elects itself the social police and they adopt whatever social normative high ground exists to maintain a class structure over the "serfs". So in the past these people were the church ladies. The religious right pushing god messages in every TV show and movie. Wanting prayer in schools. Hijacking altruistic issues like saving fetuses to blow up abortion clinics.

Now this same kind of people hijacked leftist causes and use them in the same way. There are so many similarities in these two groups to believe they are polar opposites. They are the same kind of people, they just use a different high ground to rule from.

What's the difference between banning porn because its depravity or it objectifies women... its still banned.

These kind have always been with humanity. Its the cause that changes but they don't change. Probably in a few years the right will once more be the busy bodies. I doubt any self respecting leftist or progressive really wants this kind of censorship.

The bottom line is Disney is a brand and they are going to protect it. Every contract is going to have clauses about personal conduct. If they think mask deniers or conspiracy theories are toxic to their brand, they can cut Gina loose. Posting things that are toxic to half the country and tempt fate. Kaepernick was canceled on the left, so I don’t think it is exclusive to one side of the spectrum or the other.

Being a celebrity gives you a bully pulpit, but you gotta chose well. Pascal got away with it,this time

The moment that Disney found 50% of it's viewership angered enough to go to social media in protest, they had to take action to remove her. The name of the show wasn't CARA DUNE AND FRIENDS. Guest stars gotta learn that they don't have the power on a tv show and then they need to learn to STFU when they're dealing with a billion-dollar company and it's warnings about social media awareness.

Pedro Pascal is the only one who has the power to fight that behemoth right now, and even then ONLY when the ratings are stellar. The House of Mouse has enough power to extinguish nearly ANYONE. She should've learned to stay in her lane.

If you want guest casting, there are PLENTY of ex-MMA female fighters who would jump at the chance to dye their hair and headline a series about the New Republic Rangers. While Carano is talented, she's far from irreplaceable. They'll recast the character instead of scrapping it. That's the smart money. If they play their cards right and REALLY work with the new person and give it some legs, they'll be able to pull an IRON MAN out of it and have everyone look at it like how they do with Terrence Howard as Rhodey in the first Iron Man movie.... barely a footnote once the new person acclimates to the role, does tons of screentime, and the fans embrace them wholeheartedly. Carano WHO?

If you look at the statement from (someone within) Lucasfilm, it doesn't say anything about "firing". The word "firing" is editorialisation. An idea someone might have is that this is some tactical leak from some faction within the company made in conjunction with reporter friends, but this would imply some belief in a human capacity for dishonesty, so I would never entertain it.

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

Looks like a firing to me...

There has been a connection between Walt Disney and anti Semitism for a long time and the company was probably very conscious of no re-enforcing that image. Carano blew herself up on an easily avoided land mine. She was a minor character on streaming service. They are not going to take heat for her.

Okay.

Alright fine.

We're doing this then, I guess. Fine.

Okay, I agree Gina Carano's firing by DISNEY SPECIFICALLY was hypocritical, but not for the reason y'all do. I maintain that there's a difference between comparing America's treatment of the children of migrants to Nazi Germany (hyperbolic? I mean sure, they weren't literally being tortured or murdered but given the way those children were treated was really cruel and fucked up the comparison doesn't seem hyperbolic to the point of being OFFENSIVE) and comparing 'being a Republican' to being a Jew in Nazi Germany. Personal experience and personal feelings don't matter all that much, but I'm Jewish and I lost uncles, aunts and cousins in the Holocaust, and what Pedro Pascal said doesn't piss me off, and what Gina Carano said really, really does. She is not fired for being RIGHT WING. Pedro Pascal is not being given a pass for being LEFT WING. Gina Carano said something offensive, or at least much MORE offensive than what Pedro Pascal did. The left can get in plenty of shit for racism (etc) as well. Look at the anti-semitism scandal in the British Labour party.

BUT - Disney as a corporate entity are still being massive hypocrites because they were perfectly happy to thank the local authority of Xianjing in the credits of Mulan, and you know hmm I think maybe the treatment of Uighurs in Xianjing hmm maybe might hmm be a little bit fucky-wucky, hmm, Disney, maybe, possibly?

As for "cancel-culture" generally... I actually think X has a point to some extent. Like, a lot of this does feel like hysteria that gets magnified, or companies pre-empt hysteria because they're afraid of it. But I think the question is a little more complicated than perhaps it's being made to seem. Now, obviously if you don't think what Gina Carano said was offensive then what I'm about to say won't mean anything because it ASSUMES that she said something offensive. So just, like, imagine something that is offensive in its place for argument's sake.

The problem is how you look at social media, right? So if I found out that Disney fired Gina Carano for saying what she said in a private conversation that somebody overheard and then went to the press with, I would be absolutely against firing her. The problem is that Twitter isn't a private conversation. It's effectively a form of public broadcast. She's using the fame and the platform that she gained from being in this program, and using it to yell a bunch of stupid bullshit at people.

So the logic is less:
"We're firing you for having x opinion"
And more
"We're firing you for yelling stupid bullshit publicly and making us look bad"

Looking at it that way makes it seem a bit more reasonable, no? Now again, I know what people are going to say. "But left wing people get to say stupid shit all the time and they don't get in trouble." Well, it's a question of degree, and that obviously makes it a matter of opinion again.

...Am I getting through to anyone?

I am Jewish as well and from what I understand. Caruno was comparing the demonization methods the leftists like the Squad, Hollywood, big tech and the mainstream press go after not only Trump supporters (btw I am not one despite belief to the contrary) but people who oppose the Green New Deal, BLM or don't support the Systemic racism or need for Diversity Czars to the early tatics of the Nazis. Oh by the way much of the Cancel Culture advocate are anti-Semetic.

Disney and ESPN are hypcorites because China's war crimes are fine by them

It's really funny/sad/bizarre how some people turn the villainess of the story ....into the "poor victim".
Her comparisons with nazi germany were only the very tip of the iceberg.
She did all those pretty crazy ramblings against wearing masks during a PANDEMIC(!) and all her conspiracy crap talk (of course....nothing of it with any proof).
She influences a lot of people in a really bad, unhealthy way.
I really like her kick-ass roles and was following her for a time on Twitter last year. But I quickly unfollowed her after all her crazy talk.
If you are a public person and post such stuff as she did.... you should get fired.
And Disney reacted rather late to all of that.
And this isn't censorship. Nobody forbids her to put on her opinions out there. But there are consequences, you can't just say everything you want, no matter how crazy and dangerous it is, and expect that nothing would happen.
If I WOULD be a famous actor and WOULD post all day long about how the lizard people are secretly ruling the world with mind control helmets from the underground bases.....I shall be fired as well....and taken to a mental hospital. (an over the top example - she isn't that crazy)

(Also, did you mean Pedro Pascal? Pascal Perez is a researcher into the mechanics of drug addiction at the University of Wollongong)

Lets look at their actions with Pascal Perez

I don't think that's true at all.

^ Interesting read.
But he mentions that one bad thing that Pedro did.
Garano posted so much crazy stuff that wasn't ok for a period of many months. Hard to count all that together.
So, I think it's more than ok that she gets fired (a little too late).
If Pedro didn't do much else....he should get a slap on the hand and that's it.
And perhaps he got that behind the scenes....perhaps even a small guy in a mouse costume kicked him in the ass.
That should be enough.

That's called special pleading.

Plenty of actresses post crazy stuff, they don't get cancelled.
Also what is "crazy stuff"? Stuff you disagree with?

I reckon she'll get a Daily Wire TV series.

As for recasting, "recasting" is such a strange thing, that should generally be avoided. It's appropriate for a character like Batman when they reboot the entire series timeline, but if you look at the Batwoman TV series where they recast Batwoman, it was a different character. I remember back in the day when they recast Pippa from Home and Away. She just looked and acted differently one day and all the the other characters didn't notice. That was some wierd shit.

If making comparisons between something and Yazis is a bad thing and gets you fired then

SOME OTHER PEOPLE SHOULD PROBABLY STOP CALLING PEOPLE YAZIS.

I thought Yazi was that dice game.

Let us rekindle Damsel Binders heroic effort to talk about Mandalorian.

I aint seen an episode yet but look forward to it at some point. The adverts and trailers look impressively big budget. Are there plans for a Mandalorian movie given the shows success?
How strange are the ways of the gods ...........and how cruel.
