I wanted to get the boards opinion on the significance of Supergirl crushing the metal railing.

Do you think it is from stress or is it latent energy she absorbed from the fusion gun?
Are you serious? Supergirl could easily crush that railing and half of the DEO facility if she had a mind to with just her normal power levels. It's the writers who consistently vary her levels to meet the threat and allow her to always lose the first fight.

Should she have been injured by a gun that's supposedly 100 x hotter than the core of the Sun? I think she would be. That's a serious heat level that even a Kryptonian would be hard-pressed to stand up to. It might have energized her for a brief moment since she gets her powers from sunlight but I think it would have been synonymous with Parasite being overloaded by uranium 235 or whatever they used on him. Overload to the point of severe pain. Just me trying to apply a consistent rationale to the science in this show. Something the writer's room ought to do more often.

My greatest fears for Supergirl have come to pass. The evolution of the show is eerily similar to Lynda Carter's Wonder Woman in the seventies. Both started out strong, with pretty good stories and some genuine action, including legitimate struggles and even temporary defeats of the heroines. Both series switched networks after the first season, and in both cases that switch lead to a drop in quality. Both series began to avoid placing the lead character into situations that really challenged them. The few exceptions to that tendency stand out dramatically, like with Wonder Woman's climactic battle with the Zardor and Supergirl's defeat at the hands of Reign.

I can't even watch Supergirl anymore. Every change they've made has been in exactly the wrong direction. Benoist is quite a good actress (unlike Carter) and even she can't pull off the dialog she's given now. "If you think you can hurt my friends, you've got another thing coming." That's a quote from the trailer for next week's episode. It isn't just painful to read, it's painful to watch. It goes terribly against the grain for me to say this, but the show has been femi-nazied to death. It's unwatchable.

I don't feel that this season is quite as bad as you feel, Bert, but the plot lines this year haven't done much for me. I have to agree. And the core of the show, Lena trying to force everybody in the world to be nice to each other via Q-waves isn't believable for the character. She's going to go against free will for the entire planet because her bestie and pals didn't' let her in on a secret. That's just wrong for the character. Way too extreme a reaction. Can you base a couple of shows on it? I guess. Can you rest the entire season of the series on that foundation. Not in my mind. It crumbles like cheap cement.

In my opinion, the problem is the same for every Tv show. The beginning is good because there is not too much characters.
As the number of characters increases, the quality of the series decreases because it goes in all directions. For Supergirl it's obvious. To the point that now Supergirl is not even the character we see most in an episode. Is it still the main character? Would the series be very different if we removed Supergirl? I wonder. Should not they rename the serie "National City Super Friends"?

Look at it this way.

This show has been entertaining us for 5 seasons. The first was outstanding in every way and best for sure.
Seasons 2 and 3 were not as good but certainly had their moments. I thought Season 4 was for the most part uneventful but
had some great peril scenes like Supergirl's ankles locked in ep 1, captured and chained down by Children of Liberty in Ep 7
and then the Red Daughter fight was incredible stuff watching SG defeated and unconscious.
This season, aside from Supergirl's battle with Web Woman, the Fast Forward on my DVR has been getting a great workout.

Still...with all the ups and downs ….safe to say Supergirl has been the best female heroine series EVER. Best EVER.
We've had more seasons and peril than 1970's WW, has better acting than Black Scorpion , what else...Bionic Woman? Please.
I actually loved Electra Woman and Dyna Girl but it wasn't around long enough.

This season, I'm just as frustrated as all of you seem to be about costume changes (Melissa's bangs, PANTS) and lack of focus on the main character.
So lets take season 5 as playing with house money. Hopefully we get some good moments to remember?
But if the series falls flat and cancels, so be it. The audience will respond and we'll know why.
At the same time, we can remember Supergirl for all the great moments because there have been so many.

I like the general idea of the Q-Wave tech being researched and perfected, I just wish it wasn't Lena doing it nor for the noble reason of trying to make humanity better. She continually references the peaceful application she intends for the technology, presumably so that it will be an "out" for the character when the whole thing comes crashing down around her ears later. If it were Lex Luthor plotting to figure out how to get the right frequency so he could control kryptonians you'd all be into this plot, I'm sure.

I think ksire touched on something as a potential peril, overcharging Supergirl with solar energy sending her out of control. Could backfire, but, putting her out of control could have some interesting side effects!

I won’t repeat the criticisms everyone has given so far, most of which I agree with. One part of the show that’s always bummed me out was the writers’ decision to make it a space-alien show. Supergirl is an alien, yes, but beyond that so many of the story lines are goofy (to me) alien plot lines. Part of the allure of this character and Superman to me was that they’re extraordinary beings amongst mortals. And the alien stuff just seems really odd and cringeworthy at times. From almost the start, Supergirl has been one of many superpowered aliens. I really enjoyed the Lex Luthor run last season, because it got away from the space alien stuff.

Maybe the alien stuff is consistent with the comics, but it still bums me out. I wish the writers had come up with more creative ways to challenge her than just cook up aliens. I also generally prefer more realistic superheroine tales, such as Bert’s Supergirl story, where the superheroine is the most unrealistic part of the story. The TV show has been a bummer in that regard.

Ok, in order, here are the season 5 crimes of Supergirl.

1. Un-sexy masculine pants uniform.
2. Bad dialog and stories
3. Incredibly childish and bad CGI especially season 5
4. The bangs. Fugly, even in Melissa Benoist.
5. Un-sexy masculine pants uniform.

I don't mind the bangs, but the pants are terrible indeed. Plus yes, it's clearly the worst season in general. But no worries, maybe the next one (if there will be...) could be even worse :giggle:

I've pretty much given up on this show. Last season, I contented myself with checking out the highlights on youtube, though the back half of the season seemed promising. Nowadays, the short promos are making me cringe.

What is (not) going on here?
No comments on the last episode so far? Damn, seems like a lot of folks here ....aren't watching anymore....
Ok, there were times I too was a lot more excited about the show, but the last episode was pretty good in my opinion.
The history of Lena and Andrea wasn't so entertaining but important for the story. And of course, I enjoyed that Andrea showed up in costume and mask ;-)
Was hoping that Supergirl would rip that mask off to expose Kara's boss under it...well, no luck, but perhaps in the future. However that will be a niccccce surprise when Supergirl will figure it out.
The "Andrea/Acrata VS Lena VS Supergirl" plot is my main interest in the show right now. And of course it will be interesting to see more of Leviathan before the big crossover next month.

I watched Sunday Night Football and recorded the shows. The fact I still haven't worked up the enthusiasm to watch them with all the reruns says something about how I feel.

They lost me last year. I held out to the end hoping for some sort of payoff, but it never came. Cryer was fantastic as Lex, but the season was absolutely terrible TV. The show was never well written, but season 4 was much worse than previous seasons, plus the Supergirl character became almost an afterthought in her own show. On top of that there was a very obvious effort to specifically avoid showing Supergirl fighting. This year there haven't been any changes of note in the creative team, and I've seen nothing to convince me they have made any alterations to the season 4 motif. In fact they've gone further in the wrong direction with changes to the main character's appearance and costume. I'm not interested in another year of dashed expectations. Youtube highlights only for this former fan.

I think I've figured out what is TRULY wrong about the last season, and this one.

The love is gone!

Gone are the kisses that won Viewer Choice Awards(I think they honestly did their first season), Winn's lovey dovey looks towards Kara, or Kara just being flirty with the guys! I was hoping that last season would be the start of the Kara/Brainy romance, but he chose-ugh-Dreamer?! There was an old LSH story in which Brainy was so infatuated with Kara that he made a SG android-in his sleep!
Many of Kara's pre-Crisis stories had Kara on the hunt for love, or having failed romances.

For extra fun, I think it would nice to get a clue what Leviathan's purpose is. Did it work with Lex to get rid of Kryptonians? Is it anti-aliens. A generic Illuminati? It feels more scatter-brained than the rest of the writing!

My 2 cents.
Bert

Hey...look what I wrote three years ago on this very forum:

"Acrata (Andrea Rojas) was a teenage Mexican female with powers to teleport among shadows and a Mayan glyph on her mask. She first appeared in a Superman annual in 2000 and then was only seen again under thrall to Eclipso in a 2011 Justice League story arc. Hasn't come back since."

Well, it looks like even though they never brought her back in the comics, they pulled her out of obscurity to play a major villain in the Supergirl TV show. If I'd remembered typing the name "Andrea Rojas" (and why would I?) I would have seen Acrata coming a mile away.

In this Episode 6 ("Confidence Women") I noticed that Jay Faerber has been brought on as a producer, after co-writing Episode 4. This could actually bode well for the series. I'm a fan of Faerber's comic book series for Image including Noble Causes and Dynamo 5 (there are some gorgeous heroines in those books if you want to check them out). Those comics were well written, so hopefully he can help add some more weight to the proceedings. Episode 6 itself had a mountain of exposition to get to the point, but the scenes with Andrea using her shadow powers were pretty good.

Warner Bros posted major spoilers for tonight's episode on Tweeter. I think this behavior from a company hurts the value of enjoying the show and appreciating the moment without knowing it will happen. The production company should not post spoilers before an episode. Major scenes should be surprises.

Most people do not expect the production company to post spoilers. I was not looking for spoilers and stumbled upon it on Twitter from Warner Bros' official Twitter account. I think spoilers should be posted by 3rd parties for people who want spoilers. Not everyone such as myself want a random spoiler from the official company.

If you look at Yahoo News, there have been several weeks of stories with videos of spoiler scenes to attract viewers. Having something besides the promo when there is so little worth watching just hurts them because why waste time watching the rest. Its not like the rest of the show will be that good.

Checking the ratings. It seems SG is the worst performing Arrowverse show at the moment and has the biggesty YOY drop. Not expecting it to be cancelled yet but I hope it's enough reason to make them rethink where the show is really going and maybe even their past decisions.

Can I ask a question of the female members here- I am a guy and always liked Sg as a strong (morally and physically), intelligent and independent character and try to write her as such in what I produce.

Did any female members here see that whole 'Pants!' sceme as incredibly derogatory for her character? I did, I felt absolutely appalled.
She's capable of saving the world but not deciding to wear pants for herself if she wants to, she has to be given them and act excited when she gets them? (AND in any case they are TROUSERS DAMMIT, but she's wearing an all in one suit anyway but either way she should be capable of deciding to wear what she wants - I appreciate being female it may take her hours to decide before she goes out but still.. :giggle: [and yes, thats a sexist joke but I care not]. )

Jesus H is it Victorian England she lives in or the 21st century? She has to be given the clothes she likes to wear she cant decide for herself?

I dont like the suit anyway but I really felt that dialogue was a character betrayal
How strange are the ways of the gods ...........and how cruel.

I am here to help one and all enjoy this site, so if you have any questions or feel you are being trolled please contact me (Hit the 'CONTACT' little speech bubble below my Avatar).

I enjoyed tonight's episode. I won't spoil it for anyone. We finally have some peril for Supergirl at the end. A major thing from season one is back! Wow!

The writers for Supergirl are known for making errors or going far into left field. There is one thing that Supergirl's writers do really well. They're good at continuity. A lot of series do not return past material in new stories. I think Supergirl's writers do a fine job at using characters or items from past seasons.

I'm going to contradict myself a little bit from what I have said in the past. I still think that because of DVR and streaming, that many shows are largely immune from having their ratings significantly diminished by being on a competitive night such as Sunday, and I still believe that is the case. Having said that, I do believe Supergirl's move from 8 PM Eastern time here in the U.S (making way for Bat Woman) to 9 PM has hurt the show on Sundays. 9 PM is where you have the killer competition from shows such as the Walking Dead, HBO's the Watchman, Showtime's Shameless, as well as broadcast network offerings. At least at 8 PM the show had an hour head start on the 9 PM showdown of the titans, whereas at 9 it is in the midst of the hurricane of the titans. I think if you are a true fan of the series you do what you've always done and either watch it live at 9 PM or DVR, or stream it later. I do think however that if you are a casual, borderline fan of the series, being in that 9 PM death slot hurts the series in the ratings in that the show might get lost in that timeslot battle, that casual viewers will not prioritize the show as something they want to see later or something they want to set their DVR's to. I think that if they returned the show to 8 PM they would get similar numbers to last years ratings numbers minus the 10-20% drop that all of cable and broadcast television have seen in the year to year numbers. 8 PM is a much better timeslot for a CW show to get a decent rating. I would also hazard a guess that ratings wise, last year in the 8 PM slot compared to this year at 9 PM, that the live viewership was significantly more last year with less fierce competition at the 8:00 hour than it is this year at 9 PM.

For a show that supposedly is on the ratings critical list, it certainly seems to have more than enough sponsors willing to mine the demographics of the show -- even with the risk of being fast-forwarded through on those DVRs that are being watched after the actual broadcast. The number of commercials seems to be constant if not increasing. I miss the days when the number of commercial minutes per show were much more reasonable and far less intrusive. Not the early days of this series, of course. The early days of, say, the 70s, when the allowed commercial count was far more strict.

That said, I enjoyed the last two episodes of Supergirl for how the writers have handled the reveal of Lena's rush to personal doom in the wake of learning of Supergirl's "betrayal" of her. I'm sure Supergirl will be able to get out of her mild kryptonite prison in the Fortress either by breaking out or having a line of dialogue about Superman finding her there and releasing her. The question is how she handles the next step of taking on Lena and her plans to "Nice" the Earth's population into submission. Kara may be so overwrought with guilt that her effectiveness and response time against Lena's plans are badly compromised. On the other hand, I'm sure that Alex and Brainiac will be more than happy to take up the slack there.

The consequences of Lena being able to combine Myriad and Obsidian's technology is intriguing to me. They sort of soft-pedalled the whole Myriad consequence back when that technology was introduced in the series. You didn't see more than a fleeting scene or two of crowds of people idly marching in unison with a line of dialogue of Superman also being down there among the throng. Other than that broadcast message of hope that Supergirl ended up broadcasting, I don't recall much of the overall effect of Myriad being shown in any dramatic way. Understandably budget constraints were the cause. I'll be interested to see how they show the "world-wide" effects of Lena's plans in the show. They could do some interesting things by showing tv news broadcasts of the effects and such. I'm actually looking forward to how it's dealt with. I just wonder if Lena's plans will be intertwined at all with the crossover. This show has gotten me for enthusiastic again about waiting for Sunday nights!

It's interesting that you used the word "overwrought". I watched last night's episode (first one this year) and after it finished I summed up the entire episode to my wife with that exact word. Watching Kara and Lena emote like crazy over the silly, manufactured rift of Kara very reasonably maintaining her secret identity was tiresome. And how did Lena take one glance at an alien console and:

A. Surmise exactly what it was?
B. Immediately know how to operate it?
c. Program it to trap Supergirl by pushing two buttons?

Ditto on the emoting with J'onn. So much emoting.

As for action, well, at least there was an actual physical fight between Supergirl and a powerful foe. He was even male. But the fight was very short, and though Supergirl was on the receiving end at the start, it was very carefully shot. Notice that we never once see Supergirl's face when she receives a blow. It's so conspicuous that it's definitely intentional. The producers are obliged by the necessities of dramatic storytelling to put Supergirl into combat now and then, but they are very deliberately avoiding showing her reactions.

I don't know if they are doing more fight scenes with a stunt double to avoid possible injury or make it more gymnastic. It could be they wanted to have more time to do the crossover episodes without having a long break afterwards to catch up on rest of the season. Still if they hadn't had Lena and the fight, this could have been done without Supegirl.

I agree that no matter how smart a Luthor is, You can't make that big a change without time to familiarize with the operating system to find where to make the changes. But science isn't the strong suit of the writers and they pretty much wave their hands rather than get someone to fix mistakes.

I was thinking about this too. Does Lena know Kryptonese? Considering how much effort it took for Kara to shut off the Anti-Luthor protocols, a mere 2 button routine shouldn't have been sufficient to have the system attack it's mistress!
Honestly, one thing that has truly irked me throughout the series(and Kara has been my goddess since the late 70's!)is that they have fairly much minimized how high-end Kryptonian technology has been. Krypton was the land of "super-science", being VERY highly advanced! So bad that when Astra made her mind control system, other star nations threatened war, and she was dumped in the Phantom Zone! All this supremely powerful tech in the Fortress, and Kara didn't even try to use it to heal Jimmy, her ex, when he got shot?
Also, Kara isn't Superman. She was RAISED Kryptonian, not as a Kansan like Kal-El! Her knowledge of science and mathematics should be literally light years beyond anyone on this planet, other than Brainiac 5, former resident of the 31st century. The show feels like they want to portray her as a bubbly, dumb Californian blonde instead of being one of the most intelligent people on the planet!
Sigh. The things we endure for love.

My 2 cents.

Last night's battle was not perfect. I enjoyed Supergirl facing a challenging opponent. The best fights are always battles between powerful rivals. Supergirl needed to be challenged this season. It was good to see Supergirl pushed around. The new guy has been pushed to be a threat. He will give her major problems during their next battle because he will have home field advantage.

This episode was a little "overemotional" for me with these 3 big scenes with a lot of drama (Lena/Supergirl, Alex/Kelly, J'onn/Malefic) but I did enjoy the fight between Supergirl and the bad guy. Also the scene with Lena and Supergirl, thrilling. Looking forward to see Lena's plans for Supergirl. Should be a fun episode in 2 weeks!

Yeah the scene with the supercomputer and Lena was.....odd....and so was the scene as it was explained that the big bad guy has had his hands in every major disaster in human history. And they mentioned Noah's flooding as "history"......hmhmh....the atheist in me rolled his eyes on that one ;-)

Writing Lena to be so ruthlessly deceptive when she has worn her heart on her sleeve so often before is still hard to swallow. Just as she could be enjoying the genuine fruits of her friendship she chooses to stamp on them instead. Surely she must have imagined the long term benefits of her friendship with Supergirl once her knowing of Kara's secret was official? But instead she goes for one bridge burning play instead? I hope she enjoys it because that's pretty much the only thing she'll get now. Maybe JJ might be able to rewind Lena's memories to make a nicer version of her LOL ??

Or she'll see a puppy, find her heart, reconcile with Kara and start dating her. Or, a rogue wave of Kryptonian radiation will alter her DNA, turning her into Supergirl's mother. Or, Lex will return, a changed man, and they will form a sibling mixed doubles tennis team.

You raise a great point. Lena is written to be a smarter person, but her behavior says otherwise. The best benefit is having easier contact to Supergirl/Kara for emergencies. She could have asked Supergirl a sample of her DNA to help her cure cancer.

Supergirl's DNA is able to give super powers to people. This has happen on a number of times. Livewire gained powers because she was in contact with Supergirl when lightning hit them. Supergirl's DNA infected drugs last season and people gained powers when taking the substance. Maxwell Lord quickly figured this out, but Lena and Lex never discovered this fact. Is Maxwell Lord the smartest man in this DC universe?

Lena is considered to be a smart person, but never considered collecting Supergirl's DNA for her formula last season. Supergirl is the person with these amazing powers. It would make sense to collect her DNA for analysis.

They ran two back to back episodes where Lena keeps getting betrayed/rejected. First her brother, Lex, fires her for not joining his plan to finish Superman. Andrea Rojas finds the medallion that Lena is looking for to stop Lex and keeps it secret. Lena finds out about Kara being Supergirl from Lex as she is killing him. Eve Tessmacher is secretly working for both Lex and Leviathan. Let's not forget her right hand woman, Sam Arias, last season was Reign.

In her mind, Lena feels she can't trust family or friends because eventually she will find out that they are using her or keeping secrets that make an important difference. At the end of last season you had the family reunion in the White House of Lex, Lillian, and Lena where they were trying to kill Lex as he was taking over the world. Lex wanted them around not because he loved them, but because they were the few that could appreciate the genius of his revealed plan.

By doing the time jumps, the show highlighted the events that led up to Lena's views. Her telling Kara that she didn't come to National City to make friends and wanting to know what Kara wanted for information she removed from Catco servers. All the significant parts of what have been long boring seasons.

It's really painful to read accounts like this. Gutsy move on Melissa's part to take her story public. I often worry about whether my involvement on a site like this somehow lends an air of respectability or camaraderie to people who may take this fetish beyond pure fantasy. If actual violence against women gives you any feeling other than revulsion, you have a very serious problem and should not hesitate to seek help.

It occurs to me that if the events Melissa mentioned happened recently, it might explain the show's aversion to showing Supergirl actually taking blows and punishment in fight scenes. If that is the case, I completely take back my complains about that issue. She should not be expected to act out scenes that make her relive actual abuse. Jesus, this really sucks.

Has anyone seen Episode 508 "The Wrath of Rama Khan" yet? Forget this annoying Lena stuff because.....

There's a perfect peril scene!
Spoiler

Rama Khan has Acrata bound to an earthen mound, as she writhes in pain and despair in her tight costume with her mask on. There are both wide angles and closeups. And then there's more opportunity to check her out as J'onn struggles to rescue her, so it's really *two* scenes. Pretty amazing!

Supergirl is also placed in peril by Rama Khan..unfortunately she's all covered up by a bunch of rubble.
But at least Melissa's in more minutes of this episode than probably any other this season. She's in costume the whole time, with some decent battle
action and use of superbreath.

Plus, gorgeous Gamemnae takes charge of the Ancients. Cara Buono looks pretty great for 48. Hope we see her transform from that dress into a nice ceremonial battle outfit.

And Lex returns!
This is a worthwhile watch and a good way to segue into the Crisis.

"I always was the hero." - Lex Luthor

This was probably the best written part of the whole episode. Faced with someone with powers beyond Superman, Lex is still calm and in charge as in his view the smartest man in the world about to be given a book that can rewrite reality.

I am at the end of my rope with this show. Last Sunday's episode was horrible. Alex was the only saving grace in the episode. She used common sense unlike the majority of characters. Supergirl's thinking is illogical. Lena has been lying to Supergirl for years. Yet, Supergirl wants to forgive Lena to make things right. That does not make any sense. Lena assault her and trapped her.

How did Alex and Briany find Supergirl in 5.2 seconds? The opening was horrible. We did not have any peril with Supergirl in the trap. There should have been a scene of Alex and Briany trying to contact Supergirl before they found her. The writers failed to show Supergirl in any real danger to create a conflict and make me emotionally connected to the story.

The final straw was the ending. Lena and Hope tricking the FBI does not make any sense. The DEO is a federal agency and has evidence of Lena's crimes. They can inform the FBI of Lena's involvement such as Lena's assault on Supergirl. This is very poor writing from the writers. They failed many episodes ago with their idea of a corrupt legal system that sends people to prison for pety theft. That just doesn't happen.

I have to agree with GPC here on most of his points about the show. I'm not quite at the end of my rope like he is but I can see that end in the distance. I understand SG's illogical attitude in that it's born out of her misplaced guilt about deceiving Lena. Even with Lena assaulting her and trapping her in the Fortress, she's always the type to bend over backward to see the hope in people coming back to goodness. She plays the role of Christ I suppose in her characterization, one could say, always awaiting people to come back to goodness for last minute salvations. (I felt the same way about Star Wars when Darth Vader got the lovely blue glow even after blowing up a planet. How does that happen?!!!) But I digress and can live with SG's attitude a bit longer, but yes, it was very refreshing for Alex to be the voice of reason and to point out Lena's duplicity over the past several "seasons."

Couldn't agree more with Geeky either about that opening of Alex and Brainy finding and releasing SG in 5 seconds. Hell, she barely looked weak and recovered in record time. How long was she in that kryptonite shell or forcefield before they showed up? That was extremely disappointing and a cheat to use it as a cliffhanger from the week before with absolutely no payoff!

Geeky's right about Lena not being prosecuted at all by the DEO or even taken to task for all her endeavors such as kidnapping Malefaic and holding him against his will. Lazy writing indeed. No repercussions against Lena at all? Trying to zombify a planet and she walks when SG clearly knows she was the one to steal Myriad from Superman's home base? It's not right in any universe. At this point, I'm pretty sure I don't want the "SuperCorp" friendship between Kara and Lena to reboot to besties, much as I like their interaction in the series.

The DEO pretty much does whatever it wants because no one really knows what they are doing because of lack of government oversight. They operate in secret and lock up aliens and other dangerous people without trials as a super power agency under the Patriot Act. So why inform the FBI about the truth because they can always grab Lena in secret if they didn't need her so much to deal with problems like Rama Khan and Leviathan.

Bad writing is pretty much the normal for Supergirl and Flash. Arrow is better written this season and hopefully the Crossover.

That was another example of poor writing to make a point when they could have used what happens in the US. The real situation is people get held in jail waiting trial for months on petty theft crimes because they can't afford bail. They can spend longer waiting for a trial than the sentence for their crime. Also with mandatory sentencing, there is no room for shortening a sentence for extenuating circumstance.
