Supergirl Season Five

Avengers, Batman, Superman, etc Discussion about comic mainstream movies and TV shows.

The DEO was only a secret organization for the first season. The public became aware of the DEO after season one. The DEO has two purposes. The original purpose is to arrest dangerous aliens. The second purpose was created during season one. This purpose is to arrest extremely dangerous people. However, those people are given a trail. Season 4 shows Lex's trial that took place before the series began.

The DEO cannot grab people in secret. This was revealed in season one when they arrested Maxwell Lord. He mentioned people would start looking for him to discover the truth. They eventually released him after James spoke to Kara about Lord's rights to a trial.

I watched Sunday Night Football and recorded the shows. The fact I still haven't worked up the enthusiasm to watch them with all the reruns says something about how I feel.
Same thing here with me. I have all of this season's episodes piled up on my DVR, yet I can't quite muster the motivation to actually put one on. There are so many shows out there and there are only so many hours in the day that I have time to watch stuff. Judging by the comments on here, it does not sound as though I am missing much. I guess I will have to watch Sunday's episode to catch the beginning of the Arrowverse crossover event.

Lex and this season's arrest of Eve instead of Lena were both FBI. At least that was what was on their jackets.

The DEO was still using FBI as a cover last season. I don't know about this season, but even Alex when she started dating Maggie didn't use DEO for several episodes when they were working together.

Only if you are famous can you get out of the DEO. Just ask any of the lesser know humans with meta powers. :)

They failed many episodes ago with their idea of a corrupt legal system that sends people to prison for pety theft. That just doesn't happen.
Texas has invented a way to keep people in privately-run prisons forever by calling it “treatment” instead of incarceration, and never letting anyone “graduate.”

Edit - Some states have for years had sex offenders after they finished their prison sentences go into "treatment" from which they can never leave.

Or the courts send people to unpaid labor camps where they work for major companies and the system collects money. They call them rehabilitation programs:

The Crossover Supergirl episode proved my statement that the DEO doesn't arrest Lena because she's too useful when they need to save the world or at least the people. Alex has to come to beg for Lena to do what they can't in the time needed.

The last 2 seasons have been uninspiring IMHO. As I said previously, the love is gone from the series for Kara, and THAT isn't good. Throughout much of her career, she has been known to be looking for Mr. Right, and being unfulfilled. Only time she did was in Superman Family 200, where she was a married Superwoman, married to a "Richard". That could've been Richard Malverne or Dick Grayson, but it was never revealed! :ohmg:

The Lena turning bad storyline has been poorly contrived IMHO. Kara can't explain to Lena that she was trying to protect Lena, that it was getting so bad that she had to have her sister's memory of her secret ID wiped for their protection, and that she was ready to reveal her ID to Lena, but Lena requested that Kara not give her any new surprises at that time, and Kara respected it!

And then Leviathan. They've been on Earth for five million years?!!! Why Earth? What do they really want? Are humans descendants of them? Are they "God"? Supposedly one of them caused Moses' flood?! :weirdo:
For extra fun, what are the special abilities of the remaining 4 members of Leviathan? Must be pretty big since Kryptonian history books had the one guy in mentioned from when their(the Leviathan people)world blew up five million years ago.

As I mentioned in the CoIE topic, I'm hoping for a reset of Lena's learning Kara's secret identity from Lex. That would diffuse the Kara/ Lena conflict. If that happened though, Hope/Eve might still retain memories of Kara's secret ID(from the time Eve was Lex's henchperson), and still follow through on her pre-Crisis programming to attack and defeat Kara! Of course, logic would mean Lena wouldn't make Hope, so we should see.

I know-how DARE I bring logic into a Supergirl series discussion! :hmmm:

My 2 cents.

I'm hoping post Crossover they have Lex using his page of Destiny to keep making edits. I know they won't do it but having Supergirl having to be nice to Lex in public to maintain her image and fighting him in private like in Crossover episode 4 could be fun. Stopping the fights whenever Lena is around as "training" or pretending nothing happening like in Kill Bill: Volume. Having Lex forcing Supergirl to pretend to be his girlfriend in public and hacking her suit to change it to a sluttier version in private.

Too bad he won't stay on in a major role.

Yeah, Lex Luthor is going to stick around for most of the remaining episodes. Everyone of importance knows the truth and hates it except for Lex who got to come back from the dead.
Spoiler
Lex's deal with the Monitor was to save Lena intact to be his partner and audience as he takes over the world. Lex has become the twisted Paragon of Truth to use the truth to manipulate Lena to join him as each of them and Lillian work to be on top.

Lex now being in charge of the DEO and LuthorCorp gets to manipulate Supergirl to work with him. Making her have to work alongside him so she can be there to stop him. Having Supergirl know what's happening and not be able to stop him.

Leviathan is still out there and they are still behind in gathering information.

I so want Kara to stop apologizing to Lena and tell her to get over it already. Lena has not told Kara about the experiments she is performing in the basement.

I couldn't agree with you more about this aspect of Kara's character, Bronson. Lena has done so much more to Supergirl than she's ever done to Lena, stealing from her in the Fortress and encasing her in a deadly kryptonite chamber for starters. Clearly they're making Kara a near-submissive in this relationship and that just feels wrong. In fact, throughout this season and for some of the last season, Kara has not just been on the defensive and about nothing else but hope, she's almost been a milquetoast character. Very few instances of her standing up for herself and saying "Enough of this crap, let's take this outside!" That is not a male position I'm suggesting, that is a power position I'm endorsing. What say you, other watchers of SG tv show? Are you fed up and mad as hell and not going to take it anymore?!!!

Done and done. I quit watching last year. I've relented a couple times this season and really regretted it. The show has completely reversed direction from what it started as, and is now unwatchably bad.

They keep lowering Supergirl's fighting ability unless they need it for a major super powered villain. She could barely fight her way through a bunch of robots without help from her team. They put her down near Green Arrow level ability before he became Specter.

So true! I was watching this week's episode, and telling my tv "Just punch it!" but those CGI tigers were so pathetically bad that I don't think Melissa could have pulled that off! I'm also still irked that they're using "Dreamer" as an offensive character.
Dream Girl was a support character in the LSH. Her pre-cognitive abilities allowed her to help the team escape big traps and what-not. She also had a keen scientific mind(able to manipulate Lightning Lass' abilities so that she became Light Lass), and eventually developed some martial artist skills. This energy manipulation BS just rubs me so wrong! If they wanted a heroine with offensive capabilities from the LSH, they should've brought in Lightning Lass! Or Phantom Girl! PG's phasing abilities would've been cool. They just "had to" change one of the most sensuous and attractive members of the LSH into a trans woman for their "woke" cause?
I'm seriously chaffed here!
Don't even start me on Brainy-the dumbest super-genius in the universe!

My 2 cents.

Well, I still somehow enjoy watching this show, but yeah, lately (this season) it is far less entertaining. The Brainy episode wasn't very interesting and the last one was barely ok.
While watching the scene with the tigers I thought for a second that it was watching an episode from "LoT". Quite a silly/absurd/clownish scene for some reasons.

So, sadly, the best scene from the last two episodes was this:

And before you start to speculate....I mean Kara in that leather skirt. ;)

Pretty sad when Supergirl looks better in her civilian guise! It's a show about Kara Zor-El, not Kara Danvers! I've said this in other forums, but the material used for her costume just reminds me of my parent's winter pool cover! How is it that shoppers at Walmart are wearing outfits with better contours than our star in her superheroine guise, working for a "major network". Heck! Most SHiP producers use better(IMHO) costumes for their Supergirl-esque characters than these hosers!
Bad enough the writers were lazy, and didn't go with the Linda Lee Danvers secret ID!
As for the tigers scene, we've gotten better tiger CGI from Frosted Flakes commercials!
For extra fun, why didn't Lex, since he knows how to make kryptonite from Lena's experiments, provide Toyman with some of the green stuff to make stuff hard for our favorite Kryptonian Kutie?! Honestly, there was NO peril for Supergirl this episode.
Just lame.

My 2 cents.
Bert

Yeah, the show has gone full soap opera and completely abandoned the action element that people would expect from a show about a superhero. Plus the writing is so incredibly bad and lazy. They just concoct scenarios where the actors must emote like crazy without any care or attention to consistency of character, logic, consistency of powers or story arc. It's all ham-fisted wokeness, angst and inexplicable behaviors with action being an afterthought except for two or three episodes where they deign to offer some fighting. And even then to tendency is to shoot the action with poor lighting and not show reactions. The contrast between the best action sequences from the first two years and seasons 4 and 5 is just shocking. Like I said, Supergirl is now unwatchable.

About the only good things about the 100th episode are mocking our technology with 5th dimensional versions and Supergirl was back in her old costume. No decent fight scenes and only brief cameo of some characters.

I have to disagree with you Visitor. It feels as if you're only watching the series for peril scenes. Not that I don't keep a keen eye out for them, too. However, I thought the writers did a good job on this episode, better than most recent episodes, I'm sad to admit. But the entire aspect of the show's last six or seven episodes was shifted with how this show was written. Kara has finally shed the misplaced guilt she'd felt about her not telling Lena her secret and can move forward in her life now. I think that's a big deal for this show. I'm hoping they build on it. We shall see.

Well it looks like the series will rely on even more CGI scenes or Supergirl will be riding a desk in her own series while everyone else does the fighting. However with the writers wanting to make this a costume soap opera, then maybe it won't have that much effect.

Happy for them!
I really wonder how they handle that. What does that mean to the show?
I am sure for the producers of the show...this is a rather complicated matter.
Will the show get cancelled? Paused? Gets a shorter season 6?
Will she get a super-child in the show as well? If yes, who is the father? ----- (PLEASE, NO kid on the show! That would be the final casket nail.)
How long will Melissa be out of the show?

Close-ups will probably be shots from the chest up, while full body shots will be most likely from far off using CGI or her body double, or Melissa will be wrapped in a thick coat as her alter ego. I believe they've been doing this also quite recently with Danielle Panabaker over at the Flash.

Off course it could be SO MUCH worse!!!!
They could cast her as Supergirl:
Spoiler
Image
Most of the time she would be on screen eating cold sausages and drinking sausage water. Then she would wrap her belly around the heads of the villains and thereby suffocating them. Or she would eat them to maintain her 600 pounds.

The show can always get worse as they proven almost every season.

The only reason I still tune in is to see what Lex is doing. I wonder if they will move him to the new Superman show?

I get my fix for what's "interesting" on the show thru highlights on youtube so I can spare myself from cringing while trying to watch a whole episode. Sadly, it seems there's not much from this season to watch out for.

That costume change was the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back" for me as the show has been pretty cringy for me since season 3.

The last episode had a nice blast of green kryptonite at SG from Lena as a sort of Metallo figure in a warped future called up by Mr. Myxlpltzic. And she looked at her own gravesite at one point which was actually kind of eerie but not particularly perilous. There have been other moments of her being tossed around like a rag doll as well. Not as many as one would like though, of course.

Really the best part was since this was going back to the past, they had to use the old costume. Otherwise it showed how much worse Supergirl was capable of making the world. It showed the same flaws in Superman TV shows that the first solution was use brawn and engage the brain as last resort. When under pressure, thinking is never a Kryptonian's strongest ability.

Yes, you can either be a pay member to see it straight off or, go the freebie way and get a slow download. The file is not so big so even the most impatient can stand to wait, I am sure! Many thanks for the file, much appreciated!

They are apparently truncating season five by two or three episodes, and beginning shooting for season six almost immediately, to accommodate Melissa's pregnancy. Allegedly the plan is to shoot two or three episodes of S6, then go on hiatus until November, before resuming filming. Presumably this will mean S6 will screen from January 2021, and will likely have a shorter episode count too.

I fast-forwarded last night's episode, prowling for action. I don't have the heart to actually go back and count, but how many episodes in a row does this make where the lone Supergirl action scene is a stuntwoman being thrown through the air?

Back to my original claim when they first introduced the suit and I thought she was pregnant. Could be she told them she planned to get pregnant and they planned ahead of time with the body suit which will be easier to slim down during edits. Also she won't have to walk around in a skirt while pregnant.

Production on Riverdale has been suspended because one of the cast/crew has had contact with someone who tested positive for COV-19. There's been some fan speculation over what this will mean for Supergirl season six. The rumoured plan was that season five was to wrap early (it apparently wraps in a few days), then they would take a short break and launch straight into filming for season six, with the intent of filming a handful of episodes before suspending production until later in the year. The speculation is that this plan will have to now change.

With the COV-19 doing the rounds, showrunners across all the CW shows are going to have to make decisions about whether to continue with current production schedules. What makes Supergirl''s case rather special is, of course, that Melissa is pregnant. If Melissa contracts the virus, even if she survives (which the vast majority of sufferers do), it could cause serious complications with her pregnancy. No decent humane producer is going to risk that. So expect there to be changes to season six, possibly including a drastic reduction in episode count, and/or a delay in production/broadcast.

S5 E10 "Bottle Episode" - Very subtle insertion of the name of comic book writer Vita Ayala in this episode. Can you find it? I did.

S5 E15 "Reality Bites" - Massive preachy virtual signaling by show producer Jay Faerber (whose independent comics Noble Causes and Dynamo 5 I've been a huge fan of). Off-the-charts painfully hamfisted approach to the topic of transphobia. When you have to use the words "erasure" and "triggered", and the word "community" comes up about a dozen times, someone needs a thesaurus in the writers' room.

S5 E16 "Alex in Wonderland" - Self-insertion by writer Mariko Tamaki (responsible for initially destroying She-Hulk at Marvel). She re-imagines Supergirl as two alternate characters in the show which reflect her identity as lesbian & Asian. This is something she has done quite often in her comics and YA books, so she brings it to the screen as well. And in addition, she names a location in the show after herself: "Tamaki Air Force Base". This is some serious level of millennial narcissism.

Don't know if Bert agrees, but this show is getting hard to watch.

:wavecry: I'm feeling sad about this. This show has had so many breaks in its broadcasting schedule that it's almost a miracle it's built an audience at all. Not hopeful.
I think the idea behind the breaks in it's broadcasting schedule is to combat the reality that there are only 22 episodes in a 52 week year and I think the idea is to have a consecutive flow of episodes so that you don't have 3 episodes over consecutive weeks then 2 weeks of reruns or alternate programming and then 2 more original episodes. This way you have 9 to 13 episodes run over a shorter more compressed period uninterrupted, where storylines (if you can call them that LOL) flow more naturally, seem more cohesive (OK Bert, add your joke here) and you don't have to strain yourself to remember what happened on the previous episode. This seems to be the current trend on broadcast network television (they do this with the Walking Dead as well) as they do this with shows such as This is Us, the Blacklist, among others.

Don't know if Bert agrees, but this show is getting hard to watch.
Full disclosure - I laughed out loud when I read this!
