This could be pretty amazing. What network is it on?

Garth Ennis (of Preacher fame) took superheroes to an extreme in this long running comic book series. I hope it's fairly violent, even more so than Powers was. I should probably go back and check these books.

As far as the photo above, I'm not entirely sure, but I think those costumed folks are not The Boys, but The Seven, a Justice League style group of heroes in The Boys series. If i'm right, the two females are Queen Maeve and Starlight. They were consistently drawn as super hot in the comics, so I don't think a legion of PC Twitter yammerers could prevent them from being hot in this TV show as well. Anyone who complains doesn't even understand Garth Ennis.

He was so good in Dredd I actually dislike seeing him in stuff that isn't a Dredd sequel. That movie needs to be made.

I can't wait for this, it's going to be so good.

"Superhero deconstruction" has become a big thing since the days when Alan Moore kicked it off with Watchmen (and by the way, that series unfortunately looks rather cliched and uninteresting compared to the edginess of The Boys) and if this hits the screen with some popularity, it may herald the beginning of adaptations for a bunch of different comics which deal with that topic, not just Planetary and Irredeemable (as Grace mentions visually), but also Astro City, Noble Causes, Empowered, The Authority, Invincible (which Seth Rogen at one point was championing), Dynamo 5, The Freshmen, Common Grounds, Sirens, Ultra, Rising Stars, Megalopolis..the list is pretty long.

And btw, I totally forgot about Grace Randolph's Supurbia - that was a worthwhile and entertaining comic.

It does look good from the Trailer, but so too did Independence Day and I still remember my bitter disappointment at that, (August 8th, 1998, a date that will live in infamy for me) so I will temper my enthusiasm but yeah could be great

I’m pretty glad the title of the show is “The Boys”, as someone who has a bit of a weakness for domination by a villainess, I really hope we get a dominatrix-style or Lex Luthor-style female villain. :D

I suspect that this is going to be our favorite thing to talk about over the next year. Crossed fingers and hope so!

However, this is not the first attempt to do this on TV. The Powers series (2 seasons) was nearly as brutal as this in a lot of ways, but it was just on a very poorly positioned network (Playstation Network / Crackle) and basically nobody saw it. It's worth a watch if you find it on DVD.

Amazon should purchase the rights to the Powers series and put it on the same service, and relaunch it. Then they'd corner the market on Hi-T superhero deconstructions, and it would be a serious challenge for anyone to compete with.

I thought Powers was great, in spite of the obvious low budget. Too bad about the network it was on.

I have high hopes for this new series and I hope it does well.

And I hope it stays true to the comics and not be influenced by the whiners in social media.

This image looks promising though. :yahoo:

Olesya Rulin (the young Retro Girl) was preternaturally gorgeous in Powers (kind of a Sarah Michelle Gellar type), just like the actress playing Starlight is. That Starlight costume is also very close to the comic. Yes this is promising.

They do have a lot to live up to, though, as far as the legacy of The Boys' series on Dynamite.
I was in my local LCS today dropping off copies of our new comic book, and I noticed that on the 50% discount table there were four Boys tpbs.
Even with the discount, they were still $10 each so I could only afford one right away, so I randomly picked Volume Seven: The Innocents.

Turns out the book is already a very hard R. There's a constant barrage of expletives, brutal violence, and some sex scenes that could be considered hardcore porn if set to film. (I'm definitely going back for the other tpbs if they are still there). And in this Boys universe, there are multiple other super hero teams - not just The Seven, but also a team called Payback, and another team (made of bumbling C-list idiots, so it's kind of like the Great Lakes Avengers or the League of Substitute Super-Heroes) called Superduper.

Thus the TV series is going to have a lot to live up to, to not only reach the intensity that Garth Ennis created in this series, but also to include
the extensive list of characters who populate this universe. Looking forward to it, to see if it does.

Wow, well Ive been blitzing through the first several episodes of this. It's touching, intriguing, shocking and bold. It can be funny too (The Aquaman parallel for one) and the dark humour is well balanced. It will bring out the worst of us SH peril fans and the best of us as well. Sure I've been a monster in some of my SG stories but I just want to help Starlite out every time she is on screen so perhaps there is hope for me yet!?

Some spoilers for things that I thought were great.

Edited that out because spoiler tags not working? Anybody able to shed light on why that might be?

Also, not a spoiler and an unrelated point, whoever did the costumes for this show was a bit meh on the superhero outfits, but they nailed Karl Urban's wardrobe, man looks sharp as a motherfucker. Got me wondering if I could pull off a blue Hawaiian shirt. But I couldn't.

Already plowed through four episodes (mostly over the weekend in a hotel room during a Con we were vending at, watching with Alicia/Sintilla) but I'll get to the rest within a week or so. Believe it or not, the TV show is somewhat toned down - the comic book is even more extreme.

I'm sure one of people's favorite moments was when Starlight/Annie was compelled to wear the sexier costume. :)
But there's so much to recommend you'd have to make a long list.

No..I doubt we'll make it as far south as Raleigh, NC (Galaxy Con) any time soon, though you never know. We were in Erie, PA at Hazard Con.

Blonde actress who plays Starlight is Erin Moriarty, who played "Hope Shlottman" on Jessica Jones. Yes she is beautiful.
Auburn-haired actress who plays Queen Maeve is indeed also a knockout. When you get to Episode 5 she has a brief lesbian kissing scene.
Neither of them have any of the voluptuous appearance they have in the comics, but the show had to work with what they had, I'm sure.

I've gotten to the end of Episode 5 so far, and (thanks to various Youtube reviews) was prepared for the heavy-handedness regarding evangelical Christianity in this episode. Again, the attitude against "Christian revival" culture (pretty much expressed in a scene where Butcher lets loose) is actually toned down when compared to the books. So none of it is really surprising. I've also heard that this is the only episode where they do that in Season 1, so you can expect them to get back to brass tacks otherwise.

Awww, steady... I am sure MB is as hot as ever, even if you find the shows new presentation of her not quite to your liking.

As for Starlight from The Boys, yeah I think they have cast well there with the actress, Erin Moriarty comfortably pulling off her girl-next-door performance. At every turn I just want to save poor Starlight from the horrible corporate monster that "Vought" is ... I must be going soft. Likewise, Dominique McElligott as Queen Maeve seems to be a solid casting choice. As a sort of Wonder Woman-esque type we get to know she has some complications in her personal life. Though to be honest those minor imperfections (that we have seen so far) are easily nullified by the fact that she has pretty much been the only decent hero out of The Seven so far, I just hope that she stays on the safe side of the titular Boys.

So, watched all episodes by now. A very good series/season!
Even there are no masked women (damn!).....it has a lot to offer.
It has great humor and some real gory moments, sexy "heroines" (even with pantyhoses! ) and a good storyline.
I'm glad that there will be a 2nd season next year.

Garth Ennis really likes what The Boys TV show did with casting his characters!

Compare that to Alan Moore, who hates what they did with the new Watchmen show..upon which the showrunner told him to buzz off.

One totally respects the source material...the other trashes it on purpose.

Thought it was hilarious seeing the guys making Watchmen spinning the response from Alan Moore. They basically said that they were respecting the anti-authoritarian ideology of the author by being a multi-billion dollar corporation driving a bulldozer over the creative vision of an old man.

I feel sorry for Alan Moore in general. He has created masterpieces and people have just completely fucking failed to understand them. Sometimes I wonder if there's a wished-out monkey paw somewhere that explains his talent.

As far as Ennis goes, I think he's never been in Moore's league, so there's less of a complicated relationship going on. He's written some good stuff, had some good runs on some big titles, but nobody puts him on the pantheon with the greats, and that's fine, and he's clearly okay with it, and the result is that people can adapt his work without all the unnecessary baggage of having to pretend they are working with a religious text.

Agree with all of that. I still think some of Moore's best work was on Tharg's Future Shocks in 2000 A.D. Some of those stories were amazing and influence me still.

As you say Ennis is good, but he's not Moore. This series does look good as I see more trailers and clips etc and Urban looks the business in the lead of an ensemble cast

I'm on a tear to collect all of The Boys TPBs from the used graphic novels section (purchased at 50% off).

The stories go deeper, there are way more characters and superteams introduced, and there's a lot more sex and violence.
So far I have volumes Six and Ten, but I have two (Eleven and Twelve, I think) more held at my LCS to pick up next week.

Recommend delving into the series if you like the TV show. Support your local comics shop!

Just wrapped the first season. Honestly, I liked it more than I thought I would, but it still wasn't really my thing.

The level of homoeroticism frankly left me feeling like I wandered into the wrong theater.

That said, I liked the cast a lot, I just thought the script was overly cynical, and didn't hold together all that well.

Looks like another hottie is about to join the show. I haven't read the comics, but apparently they gender-swapped this character. For the better, it would appear.

Another bodysuit, but at least this costume is not devoid of shape of any form. :smart:

Season 1 totally won me over, it's basicly perfect and very very few things could have been improved (and that's really the best compliment if it comes from somebody like me).

Much better than the comic books, with a lot of genious touches like the guy from The Sixth Sense, superb narrative/mocking of not only iconic superheroes but also a lot of other aspects (religion, military etc).

Second season will be a blast with the inclusion of other parody characters/teams (including Stormfront who has been gender swapped as said in the post above, and probably there will also be Crimson Countess !)

Wow, that Stormfront costume is well-crafted, right down to the boot heels. Wish we could afford such exquisite tailoring!

A hot Nazi superwoman in a tight-fitting bodysuit? I mean, Benoist's Ubergirl was OK, but this is a whole 'nother level.

And the actress is Jewish. In fact, the also Jewish director of The Boys, Eric Kripke, laments that Stormfront is just a one-note Nazi lunkhead in the comic books (he said so, in an interview) and that by making Stormfront a sexy, powerful woman who is also a rabid racist, he gives depth and nuance to the character that it would otherwise not have.

A lot of political curmudgeons from both sides of the spectrum are likely to have a problem with that. The left will say, "How you create a racist female character!" and the right will say "Stop flogging the bogeyman of white nationalism - is this Watchmen 2?".

And yet ultimately it's a very Tarantino-esque move. And because Stormfront is female, it helps address the "where is the diversity of villains?" complaint that comics critic Just Some Guy quite correctly elaborates on in one of his latest videos.

Has anyone else here watched both The Boys and Hunters? They are both Amazon series.
I have watched the entire series of The Boys, and only 2 episodes of Hunters - but they seem strikingly similar in style and even in story.

They both have this young man who is truck by sudden tragedy/death of someone he loves and then he gets mixed up with a small, secret group of people seeking violent revenge against a group of powerful evildoers. And, at least in the beginning, they are both horrified and sickened by the idea of murdering even such evil people.

Yeah I've seen Hunters and The Boys, they do feel a bit similar because of that whole heroes journey thing. I think that Hunters has a lot of heart though, at times it's surprisingly moving and it treats parts of the subject matter with great sensitivity. When it needs to have respect, it does. The Boys doesn't need that, and it doesn't have it. It somewhat suffers as a result because everybody is essentially a douche, but it's still a fun show.
