Much like Captain America when he first was Nomad, she's going to trip on that cape. :)

That's if some villain doesn't swing her around by it to help her fly

It seems like they made it so practical it loses its sex appeal, and then they threw practicality out the window too and built a hang-glider into it. The result is an unhappy middle.

If a story requires a superheroine to suddenly bust out a hang glider, there's no reason not to make the costume sexy, because you left realism behind a long time ago.

Another unhappy middle is that she went to great lengths to make a practical costume she can fight in, but then she has long flowing hair that's completely unpractical for fighting in.

Why make the color scheme muted and dull for camouflage, and then line the inside of the cape with bright yellow?

At least it's an improvement over the current one with that ridiculous "mask" that hides nothing.
The cowl is quite good, even it seems to miss the chin strap to keep it securely in place.
The suit is a little too "practical", could use more sexyness.

But overall, it's an improvement....even that wasn't that difficult to achieve.

Well I suspect that's just to highlight she has got legs as a dark back ground would hide that in most cases and then the drawings would look a bit strange.

The mask/cowl is fairly standard but I don't like that jacket tunic top at all.
How strange are the ways of the gods ...........and how cruel.

Hate the cape, although I might be misjudging it. Is she bringing a portable St. Andrew’s Cross to every fight? They seem to be designing the costume with a mind as to how it would look on the CW. Are they auditioning as costumers?

Its uni-boob, like uni-brow. Captain marvel is famous for this.

What I find hilarious is these people are all prudish about some curve in the character "cause of the children" but have no issue with hyper sexualized Pride parades and exposing children to kink at the parades. At least the prude conservatives were consistent, just hypocrites.
Damselbinder

Or maybe they just wanted the suit to look a particular way.

I remember Mike Judge's animation notes for King of the Hill did something very similar showing his animators how not to draw Peggy: he specifically drew a curvy version labelled "animator's fantasy Peggy" to show them what not to do. He just didn't want her to look a certain way.

No since the people who do this can't let live and move on with their lives. Batgirl has been reimaged. This is not an original creation.

Sure and they can go out of business because nobody buys it. Its a little dubious to complain about a character then change it then say "stop complaining about the character after its the way we set her up".

Also what is this disturbing mentality some people have that everything is community property and people get "turns"? When did Batgirl become the village bicycle?

Again they are more than welcome to have shitty sales numbers and cater to a tiny portion of the population.

And they are more than free to be hypocrites about prudishness.

Really isn't all this just swapping one fetish for another?

Because an artist indicated that the outfit was supposed to fit to her body one way rather than another. Truly, a sign of the end times.

Perhaps the TV and movie industry is partially responsible for the changes. Since comic book characters have been transformed into TV and movie characters, there seems to be a need to create more realistic aspects to the comic book characters. Sexy outfits don't seem to fit into either the realistic or the anti-sexy zeitgeist in many of the entertainment industries.
I'm likely reading too much into the current cultural changes, but the move to using average-looking models and plus-sized models instead of beautiful and fit models may be an extension of removing sexiness from various aspects of today's culture.
We had Mike Deodato's WW wearing essentially a thong (which I did not mind) representing a move towards overt sexiness in the 90s; we currently have the mainstream superheroines with practical costumes representing a move towards omitting sexiness in the 2020s.
Just a few thoughts on the topic. Thanks for the update on the costume Batgirl1969.

Here's an article that seems both affected by presentism and lacks any set criteria (most of the comments are just a description of the visual).
One aspect that can either enhance or detract from Batgirl's various looks is the artist drawing her character.

Lol. I don't see a mild discussion on people's approval or disapproval of a superheroine costume on a website specific to superheroines in peril as some sort of "end of times". Even labeling that statement as hyperbole is too mild.
The simple point, as I read it, is that people found Batgirl in a skin-tight sexy outfit attractive. DC moving towards a less sexual outfit for a character who represented an aspect of sexual fantasy for some is disappointing. This thread reflects that sentiment.

I would like to see both good storylines and sexy outfits for characters. Perhaps the realistic qualities of the stories can be relegated to characters' motivations and their human nature--what they do is logical and the plots make sense--but their outfits and powers can remain unrealistic. We can then have Wonder Woman wearing a star-spangled thong, Batgirl with a skin-tight outfit highlighting her curves, and Supergirl wearing a sexy cheerleader outfit as a costume.

It's always "sexyness VS realism"
It's not so easy to have a realistic costume that is very sexy. It's possible to have both....but not easy.
So, on mainstream TV you mostly make compromises, but most outfits are still quite sexy.
On fetish flicks, you normally have the sexyness over everything else versions.

Catwoman in TDKR is always a fine example.
Very sexy catsuit which is also somehow realistic with the material.
The stiletto boots, however....well....sexyness triumphed over realism there big time.

Catwoman in the "Catwoman" movie from that weirdo French guy is another example.
Realism near 0 (in many ways) ......and a costume that is made just for sexyness.

"Costumes" in the "Birds of Prey" movie....
.....just the other way around.

The design is not bad, but at least the pants could be skintight, this is alike a re-take of the n52 costume.

It's both. If you have muscles like that you certainly wanna show them.
And no, there is no need for children to be shielded from that.

My only issue with Batgirl post-Simone's run is that... for some reason she's gone and made herself less protected. She had the full batarmor and everything and then just for no reason at all transitioned to like.... biker leather.

I mean it's better than the last one isnt' it?

This may be over simplistic, but doesn't the discussion of Batgirl's costume center around whether one sees Batgirl primarily as a sexy superheroine or as a realistic superheroine? As I see Batgirl as a sexy superheroine, removing a sexy skintight outfit highlighting curves reduces my interest in the character; for someone who sees Batgirl as a realistic superheroine, making her sexy at the cost of realism probably reduces their interest in the character.

There are of course limits to both extremes: Batgirl fighting crime in lingerie would be so absurd it would remove the whole Batgirl quality to the character; Batgirl fighting crime in military gear would remove the concept of her being Batgirl.

And then there is the matter of when we became interested in Batgirl, as that costume probably carries more weight than any other version.

A more skin tight costume would make totally sense for Batgirl. She must be fast and agile with her movements. The reinforcement on her back was a nice idea and I like the mask. Her lenses… not that much.

As I stated above, my biggest issue with the switch to jackets and slacks and stuff is that she went from being in like, tactical armor and stuff and essentially weakened herself to wear something astoundingly less protective..... that said, I guess that DC has scaled back on all that quite a lot over the years and doesn't apply to the costume this one is transitioning from. The New 52 look was by my estimation the best Batgirl ever looked, with the costume doing equal parts making her look sexy AND properly 'protected' for the job she does.

Anyway... the switch to the 'burnside' costume after the New 52 costume in particular struck me as something that would have been INSANE for the character to do In-cannon, the other problem I had with it was that it made her look too young and like... hipster for a 30-some year old woman with a mind like a steel trap respected as one of the most brilliant women in the DC universe. THIS costume feels like the evolution of the Burnside costume in the right direction.

If one looked at Burnside's Batgirl as a sort of 'reboot year-one' style costume of a youthful Babs THIS one looks like the costume THAT batgirl would look like once she re-embraced her maturity.

Glad I won't be buying that comic.
A man may fight for many things: his country, his principles, his friends, the glistening tear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally I'd mud wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock, and a sack of French porn.

I prefer sexy, of course. Pure practical doesn't grate that much, but the picture suggests that whoever designed, or commissioned it is actively anti-sexy, given "not this", which boils my piss. I wonder who the image is intended for. Are other artists required to abide by it? I liked the idea of different artists being able to do their own thing with characters.

I'd like to see superheroine outfits that were simultaneously designed for aesthetics and for practicality. What would an engineering genius by day, crime-fighter by night, and fashion designer on weekends, come up with in response to their desire to maximise practicality with the constraint of the costume still being sexy? Body armour with cosmetic boobs attachments? High heel boots with inboard suspension and some clever clogs system to prevent sprained ankles? augmented reality system to retain peripheral vision through fancy hair? etc.

That's absolutely diabolical.

The wings and cape are bad. They would just about be acceptable with a sort of big armoured ominous kind of suit. But we've not got that here. Instead we've got a bastardised version of the 2014 reboot suit, except it's somehow a sort of oddly formal version? With creases in the trousers? Batgirl is fighting crime in a fucking pantsuit?

The 2014 design grew on me, the Burnside one I think it's called. That was pretty great. This one? No.

That said, it looks much better in action.

I guess I'm in the minority of liking it, other than the overly long cape.

For me I actually don't mind having a bit of practical built into these comics, despite them being a fantasy world, and I always just assumed that there is some kind of plot device in the costume's fabric like nano-materials(Batwoman had those in her cape to make it bullet proof) or some type of high tech kevlar, etc. I mean if John Wick can have bulletproof dress shirts and we can just be led to believe that Iron Man wears a suit that completely dampens the vibration from tank shells, missiles, Thor's Hammer, and Hulk punches, we can surely be fine with the fact Batgirl's costume can keep her safe from bullets even if it just appears to be leather. While I did not like her Burnside run at all, I actually really liked the costume update since it had a more practical feel to it.

That aside, I find it sexy when an attractive woman zips herself up in a tight bodysuit and kicks ass in it. Again I'm not a huge fan of the cape, but I like the overall design and a woman can still be quite attractive when she's all covered up as long as the outfit highlights her curves and makes you think about what she may or may not be wearing underneath. So personally I don't have any issue with it or most super heroine costumes that are bodysuits and boots. Certainly no one is complaining about Black Widow's costumes so sometimes I really don't get why people have such a big issue with this though I will digress I get a bit annoyed when they take away Supergirl's skirt or put Wonder Woman in pants, more so because the character has traditionally dressed that way and it just looks good. My two cents.

You guys.... ALL Batsuit capes are overly long? That's not a valid complaint. Come on. The cape is as long or short as the panel necessitates for maximum 'flair' and always have been.

I mean really. In the one picture she's wearing what amounts to an old Arthurian gown cape in length and shape the next it's somehow spread into a wing glider. Capes in comic books have never abided the laws of physics, nor have they ever gotten in the way.

A really practical batsuit would ditch the cape, because it's a horrific liability. Edna Mode wasn't talking out her ass.

This looks like a costume for girls and women who want to be a superhero.
It looks female, form-fitting, athletic, purposeful. Also like actual clothing made of fabrics not resins, with a couple of key elements of melodramatic identity.
I hope this iteration has a good run with stories that make girls and women fantasize about being Batgirl.
And I hope some comely cosplayers take a crack at it.

My perverted mind can imagine fetish variations, so I'm good.

Anything that encourages the continuation of our genre is a good thing, even if it involves non-Sexy costumes that result in a heroine fighting crime and ending up in peril or bondage, I am sure hogtied she would even be hot with this boring costume and opens doors to better cosplays....skin tight catsuits!!!
